Can Naturopathy Support Eating Disorder Recovery?

Eating Disorder recovery is a deeply individual and often non-linear journey - what recovery means to one person, might mean something different to another. While naturopathy is not a replacement for psychological or medical care, it can offer gentle, complementary tools that help rebuild physical and mental health and reconnect with the body in a safe and compassionate way.

At Earthed Wellness, I can support individuals in recovery with a respectful, collaborative approach. My goal is to help foster capacity for healing—so your body and mind feels nourished, supported, and balanced. Having had my own personal journey with an eating disorder, I know how confusing, frustrating, scary and isolating it can feel to be in the midst of Eating Disorder recovery.

Where Naturopathy Fits in the Recovery Process

Eating disorder recovery typically involves a range of health professionals:

  • A psychologist or therapist

  • A GP

  • A dietitian or nutritionist

  • Supportive family, carers, or community

  • Optional: complementary practitioners like naturopaths, bodyworkers, or yoga teachers

Naturopathy can complement your care by supporting:

  • Physical healing after restriction, purging, or bingeing

  • Digestive discomfort and gut repair

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Nutrient repletion & diet support

  • Hormonal recovery and menstrual health

  • Gentle reconnection with food and body

  • Emotional wellbeing through supportive lifestyle and natural tools

My approach is always collaborative—I aim to work alongside your existing recovery team and will only begin care if it’s appropriate and safe for where you're at in your journey.

Supporting the Nervous System

When the body has been under long-term stress or survival patterns, it can affect everything from digestion and appetite to sleep, hormone health, and mood.

Naturopathy supports the nervous system through:

  • Calming herbal medicines (such as passionflower or lemon balm)

  • Key nutrients like magnesium, B vitamins, and zinc

  • Lifestyle and self-care strategies that support rest and resilience

  • Gentle tools to help the body shift out of stress mode and into a place where healing is possible

This kind of support can complement psychological care by helping the body feel steadier and more resourced.

Physical Healing Through Nutrition and Herbs

Recovery can take a toll on the body. You might experience:

  • Bloating, reflux, or constipation

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Hair loss or skin issues

  • Cold hands and feet

  • Hormonal imbalances or missing periods

  • Food sensitivities or blood sugar crashes

As a naturopath, I work to:

  • Rebuild your nutrient stores

  • Support gut repair with foods and herbs

  • Gently balance hormones

  • Address issues like fatigue or poor sleep

  • Create personalised plans that respect where you’re at

We’ll work together to find foods and supplements that feel doable and safe for you.

You're Not Broken — Your Body Is Protecting You

Eating disorders often develop as protective responses—strategies that once helped you cope or feel in control. Recovery isn’t about being “fixed.” It’s about creating safety, softness, and a new relationship with your body.

At Earthed Wellness, I offer a non-judgemental, supportive space where you can explore healing in a way that honours your story and respects your pace.
